LETTER to the EDITOR: Victim already?

Dear Editor: I object to your paper’s referring to someone as “the victim” because that person has succeeded in getting the police to lay a charge against someone else.

If “accuser” sounds too “harsh” to apply in cases where sexual assault is alleged, it might be “gentler” to employ the term “complainant” at least until someone establishes by due process that someone has actually victimized another.

Calling everyone a “victim,” for instance, who feels he has some cause to feel aggrieved, even if his grievance is only that he has been justifiably restrained, is really extending the legal meaning of the term.

It happens too often that some are the victims of false accusations.
