I am writing regarding the state of lockers in the “MUNnel” system at Memorial University. Students pay $20 a semester for a locker and many of the lockers are full of dust and dirt and some are unused and left open.
Upon inquiry, I have been informed that it is not university policy to clean/dust lockers, even on an annual basis.
Given the frequency and range of illnesses and conditions triggered by dust and dirt, it is concerning that lockers are not being cleaned on a regular (at least annual, if not semesterly) basis.
One solution to solve this issue is the university could hire students to get them all cleaned out in a few days, plus this will create jobs for students.
It is essential from a health and safety perspective that the lockers be cleaned on some sort of a regular basis.
The students deserve better.

Since this letter was published, Memorial University officials have contacted The Telegram to clarify this issue.
Contrary to the letter’s contention that lockers in MUN’s tunnel system “are not being cleaned on a regular (at least annual, if not semesterly) basis,” Memorial cleans all rented lockers at the end of a student’s locker contract, typically after one or two semesters.
There are approximately 4,500 lockers, however only about 1,000 are rented every semester. Cleaning of non-rented lockers is conducted every summer when the tunnels’ population is low. This summer’s cleaning is expected to begin soon.
