After reading about November being a big month for the Cape Breton Antique and Custom Car Club, and the story of the couple waiting 20 years for the exact car they wanted (‘Treasure on Wheels’, Cape Breton Post, Nov. 23), I decided to write.
In my opinion, every antique car lover should include a visit to the annual ‘Turkey Rod Run’ in Daytona Beach, Florida, on their bucket list.
It takes place on the American Thanksgiving weekend and attracts thousands of antique and custom cars from everywhere in the United States as this is the final big car show and sale for the season. It’s heaven on earth for car lovers.
It is not necessary for you to go to the Daytona Speedway as every mall parking lot is full of hundreds of cars for sale. You don’t have to waste time asking questions as the price of each car with its history and details are on a sign by the car. Stand on any sidewalk and there is a steady stream of cars going by. This site is more beautiful at night along the oceanside road with the street lights shining on the procession. It is like you were living in the 1950s.
For three days every hotel is full so you must book early if you want to go. If you are not up to driving there, you can fly to Orlando, rent a car and drive one hour to Daytona.
No matter if you are a Model-T fan or like souped-up hot rods, there is everything imaginable and every car is pristine.
If you need a break, Daytona’s beach has been rated one of the best in the world. It’s 27 miles of pure sand. Not a rock or pebble to be found. I hope someone reading this make the trip. You won’t be disappointed.
