Corner Brook hold its civic holiday in the winter to coincide with winter carnival and even though it marks Corner Brook Day in July — this year it was held on July 29 — the day is still a regular workday for most people. Other communities hold their civic holiday in the summer. St. John’s civic holiday is set for the first Wednesday in August, Regatta Day, although it is weather dependent. But with a long few weeks between Canada Day and Labour Day a we wondered if people thought the city needed a summer civic holiday.

We asked: Do you think we need a civic holiday in Corner Brook in the summer?

Douglas Payne, Corner Brook

I think it does need a civic holiday. Corner Brook Day wouldn’t be a bad day to have it. Especially for how everyone goes out for winter carnival. I’ve been working now for three months and three weeks straight and only two holidays Victoria Day and Canada Day. It’s nuts.

Robbie Walsh, Corner Brook

I think we should have one, too, it’s not fair. Corner Brook Day would be a good one for everything to be closed, because it’s already a holiday, everyone already knows about it. It’s nice to have a little break.

Joan Chafe, Corner Brook

Yes, I seriously do. My sister is in St. John’s, she was off to take her kid to the Regatta. We have Corner Brook day here, we should be off. We certainly do need it.

Belle Collins, Corner Brook

Yes. You need a break. A long weekend in August. It would be a nice time to get a little break.

Ellie Humphries, Corner Brook

I think it’s a nice idea because a lot of families are busy and a lot of people work weekends, too. I think it’s nice to have one day where parents could probably take it off with their kids. I mean everybody likes a day off.

Abby Park, Corner Brook

Yes. I just think that it would be nice to have one day where families can get together and do things with each other in the summer months. There’s Canada Day in July, so I’d say sometime in August.
