Young athletes throwing rocks for gold at the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games won’t have to worry about quality ice.
The Corner Brook Curling Club is the host venue for the Games being hosted by the Town of Deer Lake with the support of several neighbours in the area lending a helping hand to provide a great experience for the athletes.
There was an issue with the ice plant at the Corner Brook Curling Club for a couple of months, but the problem was corrected and curlers have been throwing rocks on a regular basis since the ice issue was resolved.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games are scheduled for March 10-18 with curling being featured as one of the sports in the first half with the first stone being thrown on March 11.
There are six male and five female rinks entered in the curling competition with a champion being declared on March 13.
Gary Oke is happy his group could play a role in providing the province’s young athletes with a great experience and he said the club will be ready to provide an excellent venue.
It’s a pretty easy gig for the club, Oke said, considering the host is responsible for providing all the volunteers for things such as timing for the duration of the Games.
