Baseball minds converge on city

Stellar performances on the baseball diamond in 2016 will be recognized when Baseball Newfoundland and Labrador hands out its silverware at the group’s annual general meeting Saturday at Greenwood Inn & Suites in Corner Brook.

Corner Brook’s Matt Colbourne, a talented southpaw pitcher who suited up for both the Corner Brook Barons junior and senior squads, is a finalist for Senior-Junior Player of the Year.

Scott Goosney, a Pasadena native who pitched for the provincial senior baseball champions St. John’s Capitals this past summer, is the other finalist for the award.

Brooklyn Childs of Corner Brook is one of five nominees for the minor female baseball player of the year award, while Darrin O’Quinn is in the running for minor coach of the year with four other coaches from across the province.

Nick Holmes, technical director for the Corner Brook baseball organization, and St. John’s Capitals bench boss Sean Gulliver are the two finalists for the senior-junior coach of the year.

Christian Wareham of Corner Brook and Bruce Rogers of St. John’s are the nominees for senior-junior umpire of the year.

Robert Park, minor baseball chairman in Corner Brook, is among the four nominees for the Les Noseworthy Memorial Award for outstanding contribution to baseball in the province.

The annual general meeting of Baseball Newfoundland and Labrador gets underway Saturday at 9 a.m. and concludes with a reception and awards presentation at the Greenwood Inn & Suites.
