Corner Brook Barons competing at Atlantic 14U female baseball championships

A group of female baseball players from Corner Brook have only been on the diamond for a handful of years, but they’ve been able to hold their own with the best in this province.

Now, for the majority of the Corner Brook 14U female baseball team, it’s time to test their mettle at a higher level of competition — the 2017 Atlantic 14U female baseball championships — being staged this weekend in Bedford, N.S. at the Joan and Robert Lenihan Fields.

The team will compete in a seven-team three-day tournament featuring teams from Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Prince Edward Island, the defending champion of the showcase tournament for 14U females, won’t be back to defend its title because a number of players were victims of a scheduling conflict with the provincial 13U championship in Prince Edward Island taking place on the same weekend.

The Corner Brook squad is excited about representing the province.

While they are focused on getting the timely hit or the big play on defence, they are also excited about meeting new friends and checking out the sights and sounds of a new place.

A trip to the mall to do some shopping is high on their priority list of things to do away from the diamond. The topic of shopping came up in conversation at practice earlier this week and all hands smiled as coach Jason Mosher told him he would make sure they got to the mall.

Baseball is a game these girls never envisioned playing only a few years ago so they are happy campers knowing they have helped the sport grow.

It’s not about winning or losing for these girls. It’s all about showing up with a smile on their face and playing the game hard until the final out is made.

Fun times for a group of girls who found a common bond through sport.
