Though their last-place fate in the regular season is already sealed, the Wing’n It Marlins showed Monday night they can still pull out a victory as the playoffs loom.
Wayne Hicks scored twice and drove in another, while Danny Glover produced two RBIs as the Marlins beat the Veitch Wellness Aces 7-4 in Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League action at Jubilee Field.
Hicks was 1-for-2 overall, with two walks. Glover went 1-for-4.
Andrew Flood pitched the complete-game victory, striking out four batters and walking one, while surrendering four runs (three earned) on eight hits.
The Aces’ attack was led by Michael Tavenor and Steve Hynes, who were both 2-for-4 on the evening. Tavenor scored twice, with Hynes picking up one RBI.
Alvin Lafitte threw the first six innings on the mound for the losing side, struggling with his control as he walked nine batters. Six of the seven runs he allowed were earned, and he gave up six hits. He struck out four. Greg Whalen came in for a three-up, three-down relief appearance in the seventh.
The West Side Monarchs sit atop the league standings in the final week of the regular season, with a 14-9 mark. The Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks are right behind them at 13-10, with the Aces now sitting at 12-12. The Marlins bring up the rear at 8-16.
