SASKATOON, Sask. — The Newfoundland Selects slipped to 0-3 at the Baseball Canada Cup after two losses Thursday in Saskatoon.
The Selects dropped a 13-7 decision to the New Brunswick squad at Cairns Field in the evening matchup.
Newfoundland had gone up 7-3 by the top of the fifth inning. But that lead was quickly negated when New Brunswick scored seven in the bottom half of the innning.
Earlier in the day, Matthew Colbourne of Corner Brook was tagged with the pitching loss as the Selects lost 11-1 to host Saskatchewan in a game called by the tournament mercy rule after five innings.
Saskatchewan sent five runs across home plate at Cairns Field to force the implementation of the mercy rule.
Colbourne, a lanky southpaw, surrendered six runs — four earned — on seven hits and two walks.
He marked up two strikeouts in a national pitching debut that lasted 3 2/3 innings.
Christopher Kelly of Corner Brook, the only other 17U player from the west to crack the roster, was a healthy scratch against the host team. Nova Scotia provides the opposition for the Selects in its only game scheduled for Friday.
