St. John's beats Corner Brook to claim junior provincial baseball championship

Thanks to a 9-4 victory over the Corner Brook Barons at Jubilee Field on Sunday afternoon, the St. John’s Capitals claimed the 2018 Junior A Provincial Baseball Championship.

Dylan Mackenzie racked up three runs and two RBIs for the victors, while Parker Gulliver drove in a trio of runs. Keegan Spurrell accumulated an RBI and a run scored.

Doug King scored a run for the Barons in a 1-for-4 outing, while David Hardy also crossed the plate while going 1-for-3 at the dish.

Ryan Morgan was credited with the pitching win after allowing two runs on as many hits over six innings, with nine strikeouts and four walks. Devon Murphy chucked one inning, surrendering two runs — one earned — on a single hit. He struck out one and walked one.

Andrew Flood took the loss in his two innings of work on the mound. He gave up five runs — two earned — on one hit. He walked a pair. Michael Lewis was tagged for four runs — three earned — on two hits in 3.1 innings. He recorded four walks and a strikeout. Braden Lockyer got in for 1.2 innings, striking out one batter.

King was player of the game for the Barons, with Morgan taking the honours for St. John’s.

Braeden Lockyer of the Barons was the tournament’s top batter, while Morgan was the top pitching of the tourney. Barons’ Matt Colbourne was named tournament MVP.

The following are scores from the round-robin portion of the tournament: Corner Brook 4, Conception Bay South 3; St. John’s 12, Mount Pearl 2; Mount Pearl 11, Corner Brook 7; St. John’s 4, Conception Bay South 3; Conception Bay South 4, Mount Pearl 1; Corner Brook 5, St. John’s 4.
