Young basketball players from across the province will hit the city this week with gold on their mind.
Corner Brook and Pasadena are putting out the welcome mat for the Newfoundland and Labrador Basketball Association U14 club basketball championships.

A total of 10 teams will compete for gold on the female side with games being staged in Corner Brook at both Corner Brook High and Grenfell campus gyms with a hectic schedule of games getting underway Friday and clewing up Sunday with a crowning of the champions.
Seven teams, including the host Humber Valley Mountaineers, will battle on the hardwood for top honours on the male side, with all games being played at Pasadena Place.
Jonathan Snow is a member of the host committee who has been busy getting everything ready for the biggest club championship ever held in the province and staged on the west coast for the first time.
Snow said there are over 80 volunteers in place to ensure things run smoothly and that contingent includes a lot of the parents who have players participating.
Snow said there is always a need for more help so he hopes to recruit a few more volunteers before the action gets underway Friday at all three venues.
He said anybody who can give a helping hand with scoring games or doing announcing it would certainly ease the burden of those who are going to be busy making it an enjoyable experience for all participants.
“There’s always a need to have volunteers to help with any event,” Snow said.
