Seeing local youth having fun playing sports with their friends on the Crestview outdoor court is something Mike Kearley hopes to see a lot this summer.

Kearley is the executive director of the Vine Place Community Centre in Corner Brook and his group has formed a partnership with the Community Youth Network to offer two sports initiatives for community youth to participate in over the next couple of months.

Through the partnership, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held July 13 at the Crestview outdoor court in Dunfield Park and a 3-on-3 ball hockey tournament is planned for July 27.

Both events are open to a maximum of six teams with a limit of six players per team for basketball and a limit of seven for ball hockey, which includes the goaltender.

There is no registration fee and team registration forms are available at both Vine Place Community Centre and the Community Youth Network.

Kearley wants to see a load of activity on the outdoor court and encourages youth ages 12-16, no matter where they live in the city, to take advantage of a chance to spend a day having fun with their friends and competing for the Crestview Cup that goes to the winners.

“We’re just hoping to offer a sporting event to promote some outdoor activities and some health among the youth,” Kearley said Monday afternoon.

Trophies and medals will be handed out to the respective winners of both tournaments. Registration forms for both events are available at Vine Place Community Centre and the Community Youth Network.

For more information contact Vine Place Community Centre at 634-0050 or the Community Youth Network at 639-1710.
