Corner Brook’s boys of summer get another season started Sunday at Jubilee Field.

Sticking with tradition, the Corner Brook senior league will be honour a piece of its past as Mike O’Neill Sr. is tasked with throwing out the first pitch prior to Game 1.

O’Neill was the winner of what is now the Buck Tavenor Memorial Award as the regular season MVP in 1970 with the Aces. In that year, he won seven games and totaled 81 strikeouts in 86 innings pitched.

The season will kick off 2018 the way it ended in 2017 as the Westside Monarchs and the Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks will square off in the opening contest.

That will be followed by a contest between the Veitch’s Aces and the Wing’n It Marlins at 5 p.m.

The Corner Brook Baseball Association will also be honouring the impressive feats of some of its members in 2017.

The group will recognize the under-12 female Barons for their undefeated season, as well as its provincial award winners.

Those winners are Dawson Chaulk (minor umpire of the year), Brooklyn Childs (co-female player of the year), Steve Bugden (co-minor coach of the year) and Jason Mosher (co-minor coach of the year).
