The Mackenzie Glynn rink out of St. John’s downed the Sarah McNeil Lamswood rink of the host club to win gold in the U18 women’s division of the 2018 provincial U18 and U16 male and female provincial curling championships over the weekend at the Caribou Curling Club in Stephenville.
The McNeil Lamswood rink, also featuring Emma Butler, Sarah Cassell and Meghan Morey, finished the round robin at 4-0 in first place.
Glynn advanced to the final by defeating the Mackenzie Mitchell rink of Corner Brook 9-1 in the tiebreaker, before downing McNeil Lamswood 5-4 in the final.
In the U18 men’s division, Stephenville native Ryan McNeil Lamswood led his rink, based out of the St. John’s Re/Max Centre, to gold with a 6-4 win over Nathan Young of St. John’s.
It was an unlucky break for host club’s Will Butler rink in the U16 men’s final.
The Butler rink, also consisting of Jacob Hatcher, Cole Hulan, Andrew Roberts, and Nathan Gallant, finished the round robin at 6-0, but lost his one and only game 6-4 to Elisha Smith of Labrador City in the final.
Emily Neary of St. John’s was a perfect 6-0 to capture the U16 women’s division, her last win a 13-0 decision over Samantha Cassell of the host club.
