THORBURN LAKE, N.L. — Having secured their own Dragon Boat, and now fundraising to have it transported to Clarenville, the Eastern NL Dragon Boat club has already accomplished so many of their goals.
Now, they want to expand their already robust numbers.
The club was formed to take part in annual Dragon Boat paddle events in Paradise. The practice is to recognize and promote exercise for those who are breast cancer survivors.
The Warriors of Hope team in the greater Clarenville-Bonavista Peninsula area is currently made up of 27 dedicated members, 11 of whom are breast cancer survivors.
The group is holding an event at the Bill Davis Chalet in Clarenville on Saturday, June 15, through Participaction Community Better Challenge.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m. and will have presentations from a cancer navigation nurse, as well as a representative from home health care, talking about information and products for lymphedema, commonly caused by damage to the lymph nodes during cancer treatment.
For $10, there is also a lunch, yoga session and hike.
Looking for more members to become involved, the group is also hosting a free “try it” session with the Dragon Boat on July 6 at Thorburn Lake.
The event will be attended by other Dragon Boat clubs from Paradise and Appleton.
While breast cancer survivors are encouraged to attend, anyone who is interested in becoming involved is encouraged to come to the event.
They are also actively looking for steering people to be trained. The individual would be the designated person who maneuvers the vessel with the steering oar. The group has committed to pay for the training of a volunteer who steps forward to fill this role by June 30.
