STEPHENVILLE, N.L. — Ten athletes from the Gander Wings’ Special Olympics Club competed with great success in Stephenville this past weekend – earning a total of 30 medals.
Athletes Adam Hodder, Paul Nichol-Burt and Jamie Steele experienced their first competition at the Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador Athletics Championships. The games were hosted by the Bay St. George Club in Stephenville July 6-8.
For athletes Sarah Bursey, Floressa Harris, Michael Harris and John Philpott, the competition served as a warmup for the upcoming Special Olympics Canada 2018 Summer Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
In total the 10 athletes brought home 11 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze medals. Gander Wings Special Olympics Club coordinator Marg Byrd says it was an enjoyable weekend and the club is very proud of the athletes’ accomplishments.
