Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced on Wednesday that the team has agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with free agent forward Phil Varone. The deal will pay Varone $700,000 at the NHL level and $450,000 in the AHL.

Varone, 28, a 5-foot-10, 193-pounder, had three goals, four assists and eight penalty minutes in 47 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season. He also had 11 goals and 17 assists in 22 games with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

In 97 career NHL regular-season games with the Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators and Flyers, Varone registered eight goals, nine assists and 26 penalty minutes. He was named the Les Cunningham Award winner as the AHL’s Most Valuable Player for the 2017-18 season.

Varone was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (147th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft.
