Corner Brook was just what Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) was looking for when it looked for a venue to host its annual high performance camps.

After being held in Gander for the past 17 years, HNL will hold its 2018 summer high performance hockey camps at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

HNL director Paul Dagg said Corner Brook was the best fit for the association’s desire to have all the female and male players together in a venue that caters to the needs of the program both on and off the ice.

The Corner Brook Civic Centre has two ice surfaces and Grenfell Campus will house the off-ice training at its gymnasium. HNL will also make use of its state-of-the-art meeting rooms.

Prospects for the male under-14, male under 15, female under-16 and female under-18 will showcase their skillset during the week of Aug. 2-7. When those groups depart the city on Aug. 7, the city will host the three -ay provincial male under-16 camp.

During the week, the city will welcome some 250 athletes for the camps.

The four teams in camp for the first week will send a team to the 2018 Atlantic Challenge Cup in Moncton during the Thanksgiving Weekend, but the male under-16 tryouts are held separately because this team competes in the annual Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Excellence Challenge.

It is a big year for players in the male under-16 and female under-18 age brackets because it’s the selection year for the 2018 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.
