Corner Brook Royals capture Cliff Gorman Memorial Cup as West Coast Senior Hockey League champs

CORNER BROOK, N.L. — A three-goal performance by Iain Pilgrim helped power the Corner Brook Royals to the Cliff Gorman Memorial Cup with a 6-2 win over the Port aux Basques Mariners at the Bruce II Sports Centre on Saturday night.

David Budgell scored twice in the win, while Lucas Wiseman added a single marker.

Darren Dean and Trent Johanson got on the board for the Mariners.

The game was a chippy affair as several game misconducts were handed out, including to Royals Ryan Hawco, Andrew Stagg, Kurt Etchegary, Tyler Hunt and Alex Hillier, and to Mariners Dylan Savory, Michael Lawrence, and Trent Johanson.

It was Johanson who opened the scoring at 2:14 of the first, from Scott Francis and Steve Lomond, before Wiseman evened it up at 14:12, with Scott Delaney and Pilgrim picking up the assists.

Budgell then put the Royals up by one with a goal at 16:41. Stephen Gillard and Etchegary provided the helpers.

Pilgrim scored his first of the night, from Delaney and Adam Guy, at 10:08, before adding another at 14:28, from Luke Pilgrim.

Darren Dean cut the deficit in half at 8:49 of the third, from Luke Parsons, but Budgell put the Royals back up by three at 14:49. Steven Day had the lone assist on the play.

Pilgrim completed the hat trick with an empty-netter, from Budgell, at 18:26 to seal the game and the Gorman Cup as West Coast Senior Hockey League champions.

Brad Dyke stopped 52 of 54 shots in the win, while Ryley Nadon kicked away 44 in the losing effort.

In Game 5 on Friday night, the Royals became the first team in the series to win on home ice as they downed the Mariners 8-2.

Matt Colbourne rang up four goals in the win, with Budgell, Pilgrim, Etchegary and Hunt each scoring once.

Jasper Dicks and Johanson scored in the defeat.

Drew Nadon was given a game misconduct for the Mariners, while Josh Smith was dealt the same for the Royals.
