Time tends to fly by pretty swiftly when you are having fun.
That’s what Evan Gallant was reflecting on Monday before joining the Corner Brook Royals on the ice for the team’s opening game at the 2018 Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Midget B Hockey Tournament Monday at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
Gallant, a 17-year-old Level 3 student at Corner Brook High, is playing in his final tournament of his minor hockey career with visions of winning the provincial banner.
“It’s pretty crazy that this is my last one,” Gallant said before the game. “It seemed like the years went by so fast.”
Playing his final tournament at home is a treat for him. He gets to have family and friends share in the moment, and his grandfather, Phil Gallant, one of his biggest fans, will be among them.
Winning would be nice for the offensive-minded forward, but when he looks back on his minor hockey days he will remember the good friends he found, the championships he won and the winning goals he scored in big games.
“I had great moments with every team I played for,” he said.
It was fun for sure, road trips with the guys certainly a blast to remember, but the game also taught him a thing or two about life, so he’s thankful.
Hockey taught him the importance of teamwork. He knows that things are so much easier when everybody is working for each other instead of working for themselves.
“If the team works as one then the team is a lot more successful,” he said.
Gallant will graduate from Corner Brook High in June and will head to Memorial University of Newfoundland in the fall to pursue engineering studies.
He’s taking his hockey equipment with him. He wants to continue shooting the puck around, so he’s going to see if he can get a game in the St. John’s Junior B Hockey League while adjusting to life as a college freshman.
The Royals will be in action today at 9 a.m., when they tangle with rival Deer Lake Red Wings.
