Ball hockey players in Corner Brook will get an early start to the season this year.

The Corner Brook Molson Men’s Ball Hockey League, with Jamie Griffin leading the charge from an organizational point of view, will have an early start to the season this year and a shorter schedule due to a provincial high-performance hockey camp being held at the Corner Brook Civic Centre in July.

The league will get underway on May 13 this year, with the six-team operation playing games three nights per week at the regional civic centre until the playoffs wrap up before the ice is put down on July 16.

The league didn’t get off the ground until the first week of June last summer and there were eight teams in the mix for the A and B division crowns.

This year, according to Griffin, the league will see all teams play a single round-robin that will seed the teams for the post-season. The top four teams advance to the A pool and the bottom two will tangle in a best-of-five B final showdown.

The league will feature an invitational ball hockey tournament May 11-12 with proceeds going to the family of Shawn Neary, a former Corner Brook ball hockey star who died after collapsing during a local ball hockey playoff game on Aug. 24, 2016.

Anybody looking for a game of ball hockey or interested in any aspect of ball hockey can contact Griffin at 640-9456.
