The Easter season is a special time of the year for minor hockey players across Newfoundland and Labrador.

It is a time for the players to showcase what they learned all season at their respective Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments. The Corner Brook Royals are playing host to the Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador Atom G Championship this week at the Corner Brook Civic Centre and we asked six members of the host team about competing at home in a provincial tournament.

Question: How do you feel about going for gold on home ice at your provincial tournament and is there somebody that you are excited about having you watch play this week?

Breanna Way

I’m really excited to be playing in these provincials because I wasn’t on a team until now. I wasn’t on it last year. It’s really fun to have friends watch, but I’m really glad my dad (Carlson) will be here to watch because he just inspires me.

Cameron Salyzyn

I feel happy because I get to stay home and during the break I get to go home and play PS4 and play NHL 18. I’m happy my dad (George) and brother (Parker) will be watching because they just got back from Goose Bay last night from another tournament.

Matthew Oram

Probably my mom watching me and I’m really excited about seeing if we win or lose. It’s good because usually when you’re the home team you feel like you might win easier and you have all your family watching.

Jesse Warren

It’s good because to play at home because we don’t have to go far and I went to watch my brother play at his provincials so I did get to go away. I’m excited about my cousin Lilly Warren from Burgeo coming to watch me play in the tournament.

Jordan Spingle

At home we have home-ice advantage so that is good. We have more pressure on the puck and more confidence here. Having nan and pop from Labrador watching me is nice. They couldn’t go to my brother’s tournament in Goose Bay so they came to watch me.

Donovan Pennell

I feel good about it being in Corner Brook because most of the tournaments we had this year haven’t been in Corner Brook and I didn’t like it because the ice would get cold and then my feet would get cold. My dad and my mom watching, and my sister and brother too because they never seen me play a game.
