After a pair of victories in two low-scoring games to begin the series, the Monarchs’ offence broke out on Thursday night at Jubilee Field to the tune of an 11-6 win over the Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks. The Monarchs now hold a commanding 3-0 lead in the Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League.
Aaron Sheppard had a big night with the bat for the victors, driving in five runs in a 3-for-5 effort. Sean Mitchell was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Travis Taylor and Steven Sheppard, meanwhile, were both 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs each.
Fred Cutler led the Hawks with a 2-for-3 outing that saw him score twice. Mike Simms was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Rob Park earned the win on the mound with a solid six innings in which he allowed six runs (two earned) on five hits. He struck out three, but walked seven. Matt Prosper posted zeroes in a one-inning relief effort.
Darren Colbourne took the official loss as the Hawks pitching was by committee. He surrendered six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings, with two walks and a strikeout. Cory Lockyer threw 2.1 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on 10 hits, with two strikeouts. Garret Anderson also chipped in with a two-inning effort. He gave up one hit and one walk, with two strikeouts.
Game 4 goes 2 p.m. Sunday at Jubilee Field.
