Western AAA Peewee Kings coach Gerard Morry isn’t one to make a fuss over available ice time, he’s just grateful his team has a place to call home.
“Gros Morne Arena is our home site for home games,” he said.
His preference, however, for mid-week practices would be something a little more accessible, particularly in the winter months when the weather is unpredictable and the Viking Trail (Highway 430) can be an unpleasant experience at best.
It’s also tough, he says, to ask guys such as the four roster players from Stephenville to make that long a trek for a mid-week practice.
“I do see complications when the weather gets bad, but we’ll see what happens,” he said.
He said the ice-time decision for the Corner Brook Civic Centre was made by the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association executive. He said he was told the civic centre could only reasonably house the major midget Kings, AAA bantam Kings, minor midget Kings, and the peewee female team.
He said he understands ice time in the city is hard to come by, particularly with minor hockey house league schedules and so on, but he’s still hoping something can be worked out when it comes to practice.
“I understand having to go elsewhere for our home games, but we’re really still looking for an hour around the middle of the week to have a sensible practice,” he said. “But we’ll cope with it for now.”
Attempts to reach representatives with the Corner Brook Minor Hockey Association or the Corner Brook Civic Centre were unsuccessful as of press time.
