Port aux Basques Mariners rack up two weekend senior hockey wins

The Port aux Basques Mariners didn’t miss a beat over the Christmas break, racking up two wins as the West Coast Senior Hockey League returned to the ice over the weekend.

On Friday night, the Mariners visited the Jets at the Stephenville Dome, eking out a 6-5 triumph on the strength of a three-goal performance from Jasper Dicks.

Dylan Savory, Greg Edgar and Drew Nadon also found the back of the net in the win.

Shane Columbe (2), Timmy Caines, Nathan Ellsworth and Cory Perrier did the damage for the Jets.

Ryan Hancock earned the goaltending victory over Ryley Nadon.

The Jets actually enjoyed a 2-0 lead in the first period, after Ellsworth scored from Brad Lucus at 10:31, and Columbe lit the lamp 14 seconds later, with Nolan Pearson drawing the assist.

Dicks replied quickly for the Mariners, cutting the deficit in half at 11:13, from Matt Ryan, before knotting the game at 2-2 at 11:58, assisted by Brett Robinson.

Dicks then completed the natural hat trick, at 17:46, with Edgar and Savory assisting on the goal.

Perrier evened the game for the Jets before the end of the first period, at 18:53, from Jody Kelly.

After all that scoring in the first, neither team dented the twine in the second, but got back to work in the third, starting with a goal from Edgar, unassisted, at 7:07.

Drew Nadon made it 5-3, from Scott Francis and Paul Barter, at 9:30, before Caines struck back again for the Jets, at 11:16, to pull them back within one. Nathan Philpott and Ryan Perrier picked up the assists.

Savory netted the eventual winner at the 15:47-mark, with Francis assisting on the play.

Columbe scored late, with three seconds remaining in the game, from Canes and Lucus, but time was then up on the comeback attempt.

On Saturday night, at the Bruce II Centre in Port aux Basques, the Mariners took down the Corner Brook Royals 6-4.

Savory (2), Dicks, Edgar, Darren Dean and Drew Nadon scored for the victors.

Matthew Colbourne, Iain Pilgrim, Andrew Stagg, and Adam Guy responded for the Royals in the loss.

Ryley Nadon earned the goaltending win in a relief appearance after Byron Francis allowed three goals in the first period.

Bradley Dyke took the defeat.

League action resumes Friday when the Jets visit the Royals at 8 p.m. at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
