A 7-2 final score on Saturday at the Bruce II Sports Centre put an exclamation point on a weekend sweep for the Port aux Basques Mariners.

Trent Johanson scored twice for the Mariners in the victory that clinched them a spot in the West Coast Senior Hockey League’s championship series versus the Corner Brook Royals.

Drew Nadon, Brett Robinson, Dylan Savory, Luke Parsons and Greg Edgar also provided goals in the win.

Josh White scored both goals for the Jets.

Ryley Nadon made 33 saves to pick up the victory in net over Ryan Hancock, who stopped 51 of 58.

The Jets actually opened the scoring, with White striking at 4:08, from Nathan Ellsworth, but the lead was brief as Edgar tied the game at 6:21. Jasper Dicks assisted on the play.

The Mariners grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second period with Luke Parsons scoring unassisted at the 15:29-mark.

Then the doors blew off in the third, with Johanson picking up his first of the night at 1:36, from Bruce Billard, to make it a 3-1 game. Savory added one at 2:23, with Drew Nadon and Scott Francis assisting, before Johanson struck again at 3:35, from Darren Dean.

White momentarily stopped the bleeding by scoring at 5:19, assisted by Michael Mahar and Ryan Penney, but the Mariners went right back to work, as Brett Robinson converted on the power play at 13:17 to put his side up 6-2. Johanson provided the helper.

Drew Nadon capped the scoring at 18:16, from Francis, as the Mariners skated away with the win and a finals appearance booked.

On Friday at the Stephenville Dome, things were much closer, with the Mariners escaping with a 4-3 win.

Savory (2), Francis and Johanson were the goalscorers for the victors.

Shane Columbe, Timmy Caines and White did the damage in the losing cause.

Ryley Nadon earned the goaltending win over Hancock.

Nadon made 33 saves, while Hancock turned aside 37.

The best-of-seven league final will get underway 8 p.m. Friday at the Bruce II Sports Centre, before hitting the Corner Brook Civic Centre 8:30 p.m. Saturday night. The Royals had earned the right to host Game 1, but the civic centre ice will be in use for a provincial figure skating event Friday night.

That Friday night in Port aux Basques will also see Juan Strickland’s jersey retirement ceremony take place. It was originally scheduled for earlier in the season, but that game was cancelled due to poor weather.
