Royals from the past will share ice with former pros in Alumni Game at Hockey Day in Canada

Throughout the rich history of the Corner Brook Royals, fans have been treated to some entertaining players.

There were tough times, but there were many good times for the organization.

The blue, white and red racked up its share of Herders in senior hockey circles.

The Royals also won the first Allan Cup for Newfoundland and Labrador, disposing of the Nelson Maple Leafs in four-straight games in a best-of-seven final.

Fans of the Royals haven’t forgotten the stars of yesterday.

And they will get a chance to reminisce about the glory days of the past during Hockey Day in Canada with a battle between Corner Brook Royals and NHL Alumni, one of the featured events being used to celebrate the game in Canada.

The alumni game will feature Team Lanny McDonald vs Team Darcy Tucker 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.

Ron Downey is the co-ordinator of the alumni game and has been busy collecting names of former Royals who want to play in the big game.

He’s already had 25 players contact him about the game. The welcome mat is out for any former Royal to play in the game, which will see former Royals and NHLers split up into two teams since there will only be a handful of NHL Alumni on hand for the celebration.

Downey was tight-lipped on who has contacted him about the game. He didn’t want to release any names just in case that player didn’t end up playing. He said if there’s too many names he will look at some form of selection process to whittle down the list.

From the names he already has on the list, there are players from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s with players from all over the island wanting to be a part of the game.

One position that Downey is hoping to remedy soon is the goaltending situation. He has two guys who want to patrol the crease, but the intention is to have two goalies per team so he hopes somebody comes forward soon.

Rosters for both teams will be revealed during the Music of Hockey with Ron MacLean event scheduled for Jan. 17 at Marble Mountain ski resort in Steady Brook.
