CORNER BROOK, N.L. — To win a playoff series, a team usually needs offence from many different sources.
That wasn’t an issue for the Corner Brook Regional High Titans in Game 1 of the West Coast High School Hockey League’s best-of-five final Monday night at the Corner Brook Civic Centre.
Riley Simms, Ben Smith, Morgan Durnford, Colin Hulan, Lucas Vincent and Stephen Ford all found the back of the net for the Titans as they downed the Elwood Regional High Lakers 6-2 in the series opener.
Joshua Osbourne and Kirkland Anstey responded for the Lakers.
Keegan Deering earned the goaltending win over Johnny Manuel.
Osbourne put the Lakers on the board first in this one, at 13:38 of the opening frame, from Brett Urquhart, but the Titans quickly tied it on a goal off the stick of Simms at 11:29. Mark Randell and Hulan drew the assists.
Smith then put the Titans up by one at 9:49, from Vincent, before Durnford struck with just over a minute to play in the first, with Ryan Applin picking up the helper.
The second period was scoreless until Hulan lit the lamp in the final minute on an unassisted marker.
Anstey pulled the Lakers back to within two at 6:19 of the third, from Isaiah Caines, but the Titans fired back quickly again, as Vincent scored at 5:52 from Will Keating and Smith.
Ford closed out the scoring with 2:57 to play, with Durnford assisting on the play.
Game 2 is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. next Monday evening at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake.
