Vancouver Canucks announced Friday that winger Josh Leivo has signed a one-year, $1.5-million contract extension with the team.
It’s a significant bump over the $925,000 he earned last season, a campaign in which the 25-year-old from Innisfil, Ont. set career highs for goals (10), assists (14) and points (24) in 76 games split between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Canucks.
Leivo was acquired from the Leafs last December in exchange for 23-year-old minor leaguer Michael Carcone.
“Josh made a positive addition to our roster last year,” Canucks general manager Jim Benning said in a release. “He has a versatile game, is a strong two-way player and generates offence throughout our lineup. We’re excited to have Josh sign as a member of the Vancouver Canucks.”
According to Capfriendly.com , the signing lifts the Canucks’ salary total to just over $75.9 million — about $5.5 million below the NHL’s $81.5 million salary cap.
The club will need to move some pieces if they hope to re-sign star winger Brock Boeser and depth forward Nikolay Goldobin, who are both restricted free agents.
