Another Howard proved to be a thorn in the side of Brad Gushue’s St. John’s curling team Sunday.

Gushue and teammates Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker lost to 8-4 to Scott Howard’s Penetanguishene, Ont., rink in the final of the Stu Sells 1824 Classic in Halifax. The defeat came just over a week after the two-time defending Canadian men’s champions were bounced in the quarter-final round of the Tour Challenge, a Grand Slam event in Thunder Bay, Ont., by a team skipped by Glenn Howard, Scott’s father.

Scott Howard normally throws third stones for the rink, but took over for his dad, who was in Estonia coaching the Scottish women's team skipped by Eve Muirhead at the European Curling Championships.

Gushue and Co. had won five straight games before the loss Sunday.

The Gushue rink was one of two from St. John’s competing in Halifax. The Greg Smith-skipped foursome that also includes Nicholas Bissonnnette, John Sheppard and Ian Withycombe, finished 1-3 at the event.
