Iain Pilgrim found himself in the right spot at the right time on several occasions Saturday night.

That meant good news for the hometown Corner Brook Royals.

Pilgrim scored two goals in a four-point performance as the Royals downed the Port aux Basques Mariners 10-6 in a seesaw battle that saw the Royals hold a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes of hockey.

The Mariners made a gallant effort to close the distance in the third period, at one point reducing the deficit to a single goal with about eight minutes left, but the hometown Royals dug deep in the final minutes to put the game out of reach.

The win gave the Royals a weekend split after the Mariners eked out a 6-4 win over the Royals in the season opener Friday night at the Bruce II Sports Centre in Port aux Basques.

Newcomer Kurt Etchegary picked up three assists in the victory for the Royals, while linemate Ryan Hawco notched a hat trick with a number of dandy shots finishing off some nice passing plays for the home side.
