Jamie Brake says he has been approached by the ownership group of the Western Kings to gauge his interest in taking over the coaching duties for the team.

However, he hasn’t confirmed anything as there appears to be some issues to be ironed out within the club.

Brake said he has no idea why the owners wanted to relieve head coach Mark Robinson and assistant coach Andre Cornick of their coaching duties with the west coast entry in the provincial major midget hockey league.

Cornick was relieved off his duties through an email sent by Kings co-owner Craig Simms in late April. The Western Star learned Robinson is no longer part of the staff although details were not disclosed.

Both Simms and co-owner Jason Oake denied changes to the coaching staff when contacted by The Western Star last week.

Brake has been involved in the province’s High Performance Program in his efforts to improve his coaching stock. He was head coach of the Western Knights in the provincial minor midget hockey setup last season and he’s an assistant coach with the Newfoundland and Labrador male hockey team that will represent the province at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

He admits that coaching the Kings would be something he would love to do because he wants to coach at the highest level he can, but he’s not willing to get into a debate over what’s going on or why it’s going on.

“It’s really none of my business. I coach hockey and that’s all I want to do,” Brake said. “I want to obviously, but I can’t comment on what went on because I really don’t know.”

He believes the uncertainty surrounding the team is unfortunate. He hopes a solution can be found sooner rather than later because at the end of the day he thinks the players should come first.
