The number 13 gets a bad rap, but was a welcome sight on the scoreboard for the Elwood High Lakers on Monday.

The Skyler Coates scored four of those 13 goals for the Lakers in a 13-1 triumph over the Stephenville High Spartans in opening night action from the West Coast High School Hockey League at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex.

Isaiah Caines (2), Mason Campbell (2), Colton Bishop, Joshua Osbourne, Drew Langdon, Josh Shears and Noah Burden also lit the lamp in the winning effort.

Brady Marche was the lone marksman for the Spartans.

The Lakers took a three-goal lead into the first intermission, before hanging five more on the Spartans in the second. They repeated that feat in the third.

The Spartans’ goal came in the second period.

Johnny Manuel earned the win in goal, with Carter Penton suffering the defeat.
