PASADENA, N.L. — The 2019 Humber Valley Triathlon became a duathlon after thunder and lightning caused organizers to drop the swim portion of the event that took place in Pasadena on Aug. 4.
Participants competed in three events — the individual sprint triathlon, which was switched to a duathlon with a five-kilometre run, 20-km bike and a 2.5-km run, the individual sprint duathlon, and the try-a-tri, which was also switched to a duathlon.
Carl Barrett of Corner Brook was first in the individual sprint triathlon event with a time of 1:6:1.9. William Duggan of Mount Pearl claimed second place with a time 1:6:25.2. Third place went to Aubrey Sanders of Corner Brook who finished with a time of 1:9:6.4.
Stephanie Nevin of Mount Pearl was the top female finisher with a time of 1:8:50.5. Katheryn Cochrane of Ottawa was second with a time of 1:10:49.5. Melissa Hardy of Eugenia, Ont. came in third with a time of 1:11:20.2.
There were a total of 26 competitors in the races, 13 male and 13 female.
Only two competitors competed in the individual sprint duathlon with Roderick MacNeil of Flesherton, Ont. finishing with a time of 1:17:20.8 in the male category and Naomi Bose of Corner Brook finishing with a time of 1:23:15.1 in the female category.
Corner Brook’s Jillian Andrews and Caelin Randall-Scott were the only two to try the try-a-tri. Andrews finished first with a time of 1:4:18.8. Randell-Scott finished just over five minutes later with a time of 1:9:36.6.
