Newfoundland and Labrador teams proved to be extra good in extra time Sunday in claiming titles in 2019 Atlantic minor soccer championships held in Corner Brook.

Both the provincial boys’ under-13 and U14 entries won gold-medal finals that were decided by penalty kicks.

Perhaps the most dramatic victory came in the U14 division, where Newfoundland played the majority of the contest down a player after a first-half red-card ejection for what was deemed an intentional handball in the penalty area.

Despite the shortfall, the NL side got the game into overtime when Santiago Wozney scored in the last minute of regulation to make it 2-2.

Marcus Patterson, who had Newfoundland’s other regulation-time tally, provided the clinching goal in the penalty-kick session.

The result meant the home side went undefeated in the four-team event with an overall 3-0-1 record.

Meanwhile, Nathan Osborne got the penalty-kick clincher for NL in a 2-1 win over Prince Edward Island in the U13 gold-medal contest.

Matthew Butler had the regulation-time goal for Newfoundland, which had gone 2-1-0 in the round-robin portion of the event.

The Atlantic girls U13 and U14 championships were also held over the weekend and hosted by P.E.I.

The NL U13 girls came away with a silver medal after falling 1-0 to Nova Scotia in Sunday’s championship final. The Newfoundlanders were 1-1-1 in the round robin.

The provincial U14 girls lost all four of their games, including a 1-0 setback Sunday against P.E.I. to decide third and fourth place.
