Newfoundland swimming star Katarina Roxon is in London today for the start of the 2019 world para swimming championship.

It’s the first qualifying event for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Roxon, a 26-year-old from Kippens, will swim in the 100-metre freestyle S9 race today, the 4x100m free relay Friday, 200m individual medley SM9 Saturday and the 100m breaststroke SB8 and 4x100m IM relay on Sunday.

Roxon will be attempting to qualify for Tokyo, which would be her fourth Paralympic Games after swimming in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics, the 2012 London Paralympics and the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, when she competed as a 15-year-old.

She won her first Paralympic medal in Rio, a gold in the 100m breaststroke in Canadian record time.

At the 2019 Canadian swimming trials in April, Roxon won multi-class silver medals in the 100m free and 200m IM.
