Newfoundland baseball Hall of Famer Phonse Jesso, long a mainstay in the Corner Brook Barons pitching rotation in provincial play, passed away Friday on the west coast of the province.

Jesso, a crafty southpaw throughout his career, was inducted into the Baseball Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame in 1987.

He was a member of the Newfoundland Terra Novas team that won the 1966 Dominion junior baseball championship at St. Pat’s Ball Park in St. John’s, with Newfoundland beating Ontario 4-3 in the final.

It was the first Canadian medal Newfoundland won in national sports play.

Jesso also played on the 1969 Canada Games team before starring for the Barons in the all-Newfoundland senior championship for many years.
