CORNER BROOK, N.L. — After a lot of hard work by team representatives, the West Coast Senior Hockey League will get its start this coming weekend.
Dave Bruce, the league's public relations director, has confirmed the opening game will take place Friday with the Corner Brook Royals playing host to the Deer Lake Red Wings at the civic centre.
On Saturday, the Port aux Basques Mariners will host the Royals at the Bruce 2 arena.
The schedule features all Friday games at 8 p.m. and Saturday games at 7:30 p.m. with no Sunday games in the schedule, due to lack of fan attendance in the past.
Bruce said each team put forward its protected list of 13 players and two goalies on Nov. 8 for the league to review to ensure requirements, including residency, were met.
The league then had 45 players registered for a draft, which was held Nov. 14. Of those players, 35 were selected by the teams. The remaining 10 are now free agents who can possibly be added to any of the teams.
Bruce said there will be another draft process in early January to see if there is more interest by players who might have missed the draft or have moved into the area.
He said team representatives feel good about the way the teams have been put together and are hoping for a good competitive league this year.
