MacKenzie Glynn and her St. John’s Curling Club rink are repeat Newfoundland and Labrador junior women’s champions.
Glynn and teammates Katie Follett, Sarah Chaytor and Camille Burt, coached by Dave Trickett, defeated clubmate Emily Neary at their home rink, the Re/Max Centre, on Thursday afternoon to finish with a 4-0 preliminary-round record.
There would have been a final this afternoon between the top two finishers had none of the three teams entered in the junior women’s division gone through the double round robin undefeated. However, Glynn and her team were dominating — outscoring their opposition 34-16 — on their way to a perfect record that made them automatic winners and two-time champions.
Neary and Mackenzie Mitchell’s Corner Brook rink both finished 1-3, with Mitchell winning 13-5 Thursday night in what turned out to be the last game of the female event.
There will be a final in the junior men’s provincials, being held concurrently at the Re/Max Centre. That game, which will be played at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, will be an all St. John’s C.C. matchup, with defending N.L. champion Greg Blyde taking on Nathan Young.
Blyde finished with a 5-1 record after the double round robin and having split his two games with Young.
Young had a 4-2 preliminary-round record, clinching his spot in today’s final with a 10-4 win over Evan McDonah of St. John’s Friday night.
McDonah had a 3-3 record, while Joel Krats of Gander was winless in his team’s six games.
The winner of today’s Blyde-Young game will join Glynn’s rink at the 2019 Canadian junior championships, to be played next month in Prince Albert, Sask.
