FRENCHMAN'S COVE, N.L. — Matthew Hackett showed consistency in firing two rounds of 80 to capture the 2019 Grande Meadows Invitational Golf Tournament championship.
It was the 22nd edition of the event, held June 8-9, and Hackett’s third A Division win. The Grande Meadows golfer previously won in 2015 and 2016.
Hackett carded his second straight score of 80 on Sunday for a 36-hole total of 160 to win by three strokes over first-round leader Bob Hoyles, also of Grande Meadows. Hoyles had scores of 79 and 84.
Hudson Stratton of St. John's fired a tournament low score of 77 on Sunday to go along with an 88 on Saturday, finishing at 165, just one stroke ahead of 2018 winner Perry Stone of Grande Meadows, who had scores of 82 and 84.
Hoyles captured the A Division low net with a total of 145 to win by two strokes over Barry Stacey and Bill Hanrahan, both of Grande Meadows, who had totals of 147.
B Division
Gary Smith of Grande Meadows won the B Division in a count back after tying with Bernie Halloran of St. John's with a two-day total of 174. Smith had daily scores of 86 and 88 while Halloran carded daily scores of 94 and 80, which turned out to be the low daily score for the B Division.
Vince Baker of Grande Meadows finished one stroke back with a 175 total from scores of 86 and 89.
Halloran captured the B Division low net with a total of 142 to win over Bill Halley of St. John’s, who finished with a 149, total which was two strokes ahead of Gary Gulliver of Pitcher’s Pond at 151.
C Division
Glenn Price of Grande Meadows won the C Division with a two-day total of 171 from daily scores of 86 and 85.
Kevin Pittman of Grande Meadows finished second with a two-day total of 181 from scores of 96 and 85. Stan McCarthy and Wayne Antle, both of Grande Meadows, tied for third with totals of 185. McCarthy had scores of 92 and 93 while Antle carded a 93 and a 92.
Antle captured the C Division low net with a two-day total of 131 while Dan Walsh of Grande Meadows was second with 142, followed closely by John Bugden of Grande Meadows in third with 143.
