Monarchs edge Hawks again to take 2-0 series lead in Corner Brook senior baseball final

Both the West Side Monarchs and Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks pretty much scored runs at will during first-round playoff triumphs against the Veitch Physiotherapy Aces and Wing n’ It Curling Marlins, respectively.

West Side Monarchs’ Travis Taylor delivers a pitch while Veitch’s Ultramar Hawks base runner Ryan Price (foreground) looks to head for home. Price didn’t get the chance to cross the plate, however, as Taylor struck out Mike Simms to end the inning.

The offence has been much harder to come by in the Corner Brook Molson Senior Baseball League best-of-seven final, but the Monarchs won’t be complaining much after a 1-0 victory at Jubilee Field on Tuesday night gave them a 2-0 series edge.

The Monarchs took Game 1 by a 2-1 score on Sunday.

A Brad Greene run in an extra eighth inning was the lone difference between the two sides on this night.

Travis Taylor pitched the win, going the distance and allowing seven hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Braden Lockyer came out on the losing end, despite giving up the one run on eight hits. He had four strikeouts and four walks.

Jeff Gillam went 3-for-4 on the night in the win, while Steven Sheppard posted a 2-for-2 stat line.

Perry Alexander led the Hawks with a 2-for-4 outing.

Game 3 goes 7 p.m. Thursday night at Jubilee Field.
