Newfoundland and Labrador out of medal hunt in Canada Games male hockey

Newfoundland and Labrador’s medal hopes in male hockey were dashed Tuesday night by a 6-3 loss to New Brunswick at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Alta.
A win in the qualification contest would have put the Newfoundlanders into the playoff quarter-finals. As it is, the best they can do is a ninth-place finish.
The N.L. team fell behind 2-0 midway through the first period of Tuesday night’s game and could never make up the difference.
Liam Marshall, Zach Dean and Brady Mitchelmore had the goals for Newfoundland, which had gone 4-0 in the lower-tier Pool C to advance to the qualification round.
Evan Martin faced 37 shots in the N.L. goal.
Newfoundland will face Nunavut this afternoon in the first game of the placement round. A win there would send N.L. into the ninth-10th place game Thursday against either Prince Edward Island or the Northwest Territories.
Elsewhere Tuesday at the Canada Games, Newfoundland’s wheelchair basketball team registered its first win in four games, downing Nova Scotia 41-30.
Nick Power led N.L. with 17 points, while Rebecca Greene and Alex Wells each had 11.
Newfoundland begins play in the consolation round of the wheelchair hoops event today.
In artistic gymnastics, Jillian Hutchings finished 17th in a field of 36 to record the best-ever Canada Games result for Newfoundland in the female all-around competition. Hutchings’ teammates, Lauren Pace and Lauren Mills were 20th and 24th, respectively.
In biathlon, Jesse Byrne had Newfoundland’s best finish of the day, slotting 20th of 36 competitors in the male 7.5-kilometre sprint.
