Female baseball players registered with minor programs in central and western Newfoundland have a chance to play on a travel team.

Jason Mosher of Corner Brook and Dale Green of Grand Falls-Windsor are the coaches for a 14U female baseball team that will participate in the Bedford Days Baseball Tournament being held Canada Day weekend in Bedford, N.S.

Marking the first time the annual tournament featured a 14U female division, there will be two open tryouts for the purpose of selecting a team to test their skills against other female players in Atlantic Canada.

The first open tryout is scheduled for Friday 7-9:30 p.m. at the Corner Brook Civic Centre Annex and the other one will take place March 10 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Exploits Valley Intermediate in Grand Falls-Windsor.

Female baseball programs in Bay St. George, Pasadena, Corner Book and Grand Falls-Windsor have a number of players who will have a chance to make the cut so they are encouraged to attend the open workouts.

Coach Mosher said the team will be picked after the two tryout sessions are completed and then a number of workouts will be scheduled to prepare the girls for the tournament.

Mosher said it’s an exciting time for the girls because they get a chance to travel out of province and find out how they stack up against some female teams who have been playing female baseball for a number of years.
