Two Corner Brook natives won gold medals on the national five-pin bowling stage as members of St. John’s bowling alleys.
Corner Brook native Sara Kennedy of Holiday Lanes won gold in women’s singles at the 2014 National Five-Pin Open Bowling Championships at the Chinook Bowladrome over the weekend, while Stephen Peddle — who grew up honing his skills in the Corner Brook Youth Bowling Canada program — won a gold medal as a member of the St. Pat’s Lanes men’s championship team representing Newfoundland and Labrador in Calgary.
Kennedy had a 246.6 average for the national tournament finishing fourth overall in the group of five women who advanced to the stepladder final for the women’s national Open singles crown. Kennedy posted five wins in a row in the journey to gold, which culminated with her defeating top seed Helene Godmaire — who had to be beaten twice as the top seed — in two-straight games in the stepladder final.
Peddle posted a tournament average of 256.73 with a 328 single his best performance on the hardwood in round-robin play as the Newfoundland and Labrador men’s team defeated Alberta twice — 6-2 both times — in the men’s stepladder final.
The men’s team finished second overall of the four teams earning a berth in the stepladder final.
Peddle’s teammates included, Chris Harris, Dave Hann, Kelley Hann, Stephen Peddle, Scott Thurston and Lee Escott
The Alberta team finished just 2.5 points ahead of Newfoundland and Labrador in the race to the top in round-robin play.
Saskatchewan sent Quebec packing in the first match of the men’s team stepladder final, but had to settle for bronze after losing 5-2 to Peddle and company.
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Shane Chafe managed to advance to the men’s singles stepladder final in fourth spot.
But Chafe was stopped in his tracks against fifth-place finisher Sylvain Bercier who finished with a 238 single, a mere three points better than Chafe.
Corner Brook Centre Bowl — the province’s representative in the women’s team event — finished in eighth place out of a field of eight teams with 62 points.
The Corner Brook squad was led by Erin Power with a 223.29 average and a 283 single.
Sasha Lockyer shared the spotlight with a team-high 301 single and 222.21 tournament average.
The Newfoundland and Labrador mixed team, based out of the capital city, had to settle for eighth place overall against the best in Canada with 62 points.
