Nathan King smacks around golf balls every chance he gets during the summer months.
He spends his winter throwing rocks at the curling rink.
It’s a busy grind the 19-year-old has embraced for years and continues to do now that he is a student at Memorial University working his way towards a bachelor of commerce degree.
The multi-sport athlete loves to watch a lot of sports on television. He is a big football fan who started to cheer for the New England Patriots when the team started to rack up Super Bowl wins a few years back. As a former hockey player, he’s still a big fan of the game, choosing to sit back and relax in the comforts of home to follow his beloved Ottawa Senators on television.

But, what would he really want to spend his time doing if he woke up some day and never had his two loves to keep him content?
He would spend more time with his guitar in hand.
He has been picking up the guitar a few times a week for a couple of years and he isn’t ready to take to the stage by any means, but he has always listened to music before going on the ice or the golf course because it had a calming effect for him.
“I have always enjoyed all types of music and kind of hearing it and just thinking how great it is and how cool it would be to actually be able to do it,” he said.
King will be heading to Prince Albert, Sask., later this month to participate in his second national junior men’s curling championship as a member of the Greg Blyde foursome that includes two of his buddies from the west coast — Daniel Bruce of Corner Brook and Ryan McNeil-Lamswood.
The trio of west coast guys have been great friends for years, curling together in the winter and playing golf in the summer. They have spent a lot of time together on and off the field of play and King and Bruce are actually roommates while attending MUN so they don’t get much of a break away from each other these days.
But, King believes that’s one of the keys to the guys sticking together and finding success together so the familiarity is something they view as a big positive.
“We know how to react to each other and what we need to do to help each other out during a tough decision and things like that,” King.
He is the lead on the team so his energy will be concentrated on being effective throwing draws and guards for the rest of the guys. He takes pride in being a good sweeper so that’s all he plans on doing when he hits the ice in Prince Albert.
King hopes to sweep his way to a national title. If that happens, he may just have to break out the guitar to get the party started.
