GARNISH-FRENCHMAN’S COVE, N.L. – Under ideal conditions, 108 runners toed the start line in the 37th running of the VOCM 740 Garnish-Frenchman’s Cove 10K Road Race on June 8.
Last year’s men’s champion and four-time winner David Freake took the early lead and crossed the finish line in first place in a time of 32:51.
Nick Snow placed second in a time of 35:09. Snow was the top finisher in the 20-29 age class. Third place went to Peter Bazeley in a time of 35:26.
Former champion, Kate Bazeley, ran away with the female race, finishing in a record time of 35:18. That eclipsed her previous record of 35:26 set in 2010. Janelle Simmons came in second in a time of 40:02 while Krissy Dooling placed third in 40:16.
In the under-20 category, the top male finisher was Alexander Pittman in a time of 35:56 while the top female finisher was Katrina-Lynn Picco in a time of 40:38. Picco’s time broke a long-standing 25-year record in the age class.
Top female finisher in the 20-29 age class was Stephanie Nevin in a time of 41:07 with Nick Snow claiming top honours in the male division with a time of 35:09.
Margo Soucy claimed top spot in the 40-49 female category in a time of 44:08 with Jamie West winning the male division in 36:29.
Susan Brockerville was first in the female 50-59 age class in 53:30 while the winner in the male division was Ed Durnford in 38:13.
June Clarke won the 60-69 female category in 1:04:13 with Guy Beazley winning the male division in 43:11. Joan Pope was first in the 70-79 female age class in 1:05:35 with Murdock Hiscock taking top honours in the male division in a time of 48:52.
The VOCM 740 road race committee thanked all its sponsors and volunteers for helping make this year’s event a success once again.
