Junior curling provincials underway in Gander

The Daniel Bruce and Ryan McNeil Lamswood rinks both got off to successful starts in the U18 men’s bracket of the 2016 junior curling provincials in Gander on Thursday.

Corner Brook Curling Club’s Bruce — along with rinkmates Nick O’Neill, Andrew Bruce and Nathan King — defeated Nathan Young of St. John’s 5-3 on the opening day, scoring deuces in the second and sixth ends, along with one in the fifth.

Young replied with singles in the third, fourth and seventh ends.

McNeil Lamswood, representing the Caribou Curling Club with rinkmates Zach Payne, Craig Laing and Connor Stapleton, downed Coleton Vriesendorp of St. John’s 6-4.

McNeil Lamswood started strong, scoring two in both the first and second ends, before adding singles in the third and fifth.

Vriesendorp mustered deuces in the fourth and seventh.

Another Corner Brook Curling Club rink — Devon Knight, Marcus Ford, Andrew Luther and Ryan Hobbs — dropped a 10-2 decision to Andrew Lawrence of St. John’s.

Lawrence amassed three points in the fourth, two in the sixth and singles in the first, third, fifth, seventh and eighth en route to the win.

Both Knight’s points came in the second end.

In action from the U16 men’s division, Corner Brook Curling Club’s Daniel O’Neill — with rinkmates Noah Hynes, Will Butler and Scott Tulloch — downed Ryan Pryor of Gander 9-5.

O’Neill scored big fours in both the second and fifth ends, with a single coming in the sixth.

Pryor scored three in the first end, but managed just singles in the third and fourth the rest of the way.

Caribou Curling Club’s Jonah Drake, meanwhile, lost by a 6-5 score to Joel Krats of Labrador.

Drake, along with rinkmates Andrew Joy, Adam Kendall, Cameron Caines and fifth Will Butler, registered two in the first, and singles in the third, fourth and sixth ends in the loss.

Krats rang up three in the second, two in the fifth and a single in the seventh for the win.

In the other game, Ethan Davidge of Gander blanked Matthew Rodgers of St. John’s 7-0.

Action in both divisions resumes today, while play in the U16 and U18 women’s divisions begins.
