Minor softball programs on the west coast no longer exist, but there’s an effort being made to provide a game to youth in pockets of the region who want to play.

Corner Brook’s Kathy Lukeman and Peggy Colbourne are veteran players in the local women’s softball circuit who have been working hard to get softball breathing again on the west coast of the province.

Working with representatives in communities like St. Anthony and Isle aux Morts, and with Softball Newfoundland and Labrador president Ross Crocker on board, the plan for this summer is to have various regions host a tournament in an effort to promote softball in the nooks and crannies of the west coast.

Promoting softball in the schools and various recreation departments in towns in the area has been something that organizers like Lukeman and Colbourne have been doing in an effort to get youth on the softball field.

There isn’t a set program with set hours as there has been in the past, but that could change if the numbers warrant it over the next year or so as people interested in seeing it revived work together to see what can be done.

Lukeman believes it’s a game that any youth can play and they don’t have to give up anything to be able to add it to their list of things to do during the summer holidays.

A teleconference for interested groups was held last week to gauge interest and see who was interested in hosting a tournament.

Isle aux Morts, St. Anthony and Corner Brook are among the communities focused on hosting a tournament for a particular age group and boys and girls on the west coast are welcome to join in the fun.

Anybody interested in playing minor softball or want more information can contact Lukeman at 640-8413.
