Newfoundland and Labrador will play its final match today, taking on New Brunswick for fifth place in the men’s soccer competition at the Ralph Cantafio Complex.
Jack Haywood made some key second-half saves to earn the shutout and Newfoundland survived going down to 10 men after Felly Elonda was sent off late in the contest in a 1-0 placement-round win over Nova Scotia on Friday.
Swimming
Victoria Stokes of Logy Bay, Kate Sullivan of St. John’s and Matty Whelan of St. John's will compete today in the 5,000-metre competitions that concludes the swimming competition at the Games.
Normally, this is an open-water swim, but the Host Society made the decision to move it indoors to the Pan Am pool after E coli levels at Birds Hill Provincial Park, which was the original venue for the race, were found to “slightly exceed the acceptable levels for recreational water standards.”
That means the 18 swimmers entered in the event will have to engage in timed heats consisting of 100 laps of the 50-metre Pan Am pool.
On Friday, Ryan Drover of Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s recorded his second fourth-place finish of the Games, this time in the Special Olympics male 50-metre freestyle.
Emily Ricketts of St. John’s swam in the A final of the 200-metre individual medley, finishing seventh.
Also recording a top-10 finish was Sullivan, eighth in the 800m freestyle, which had standings based on timed heats without a final race.
Appearing in B finals were Kate Williams of St. John’s (8th, 50m free), and Joseph Dwyer of Paradise (4th) and Ewan MacLean of Gander (8th) in the 50-metre backstroke.
Cycling
The criterium, the final event of the Games cycling schedule, will be held at Red River Park in the west end of Winnipeg this evening.
For men (Newfoundland has on female cyclists in Winnipeg), the criterium is a 50-kilometre event consisting of laps conducted over a closed course.
Golf
Andrew Bruce of Corner Brook finished 22nd in the men’s golfing competition with a 302 (plus-14) total after recording a final-round 76 on the par-72 Southwood course Friday.
Michael Simms of St. John’s finished at 338.
On the women’s side, Taylor Cormier of Corner Brook had Newfoundland and Labrador’s top score, a 338, while Paige Hickey, also of Corner Brook was at 428.
The province’s two other golfers, Evan D’Angelo of St. John’s and Megan Colbourne of Corner Brook, had withdrawn from the competition earlier in the week.
Volleyball
The Games volleyball competition concludes today, but Newfoundland and Labrador’s teams played their final matches Friday, both defeating Prince Edward Island to finish in ninth place,
The women’s team had to rally from being down 2-1 in sets for a 3-2 win, while the men won in straight sets.
Wrestling
Newfoundland and Labrador wrestlers were ninth in both the female and male team competition, but wrestling was the talk of the whole provincial contingent Friday, with Angel Hiltz-Morrell of Avondale winning Newfoundland’s first medal of the Games, a silver in the women’s 84kg event.
