Parity rules at women’s curling club championships

It’s anyone’s title at the 2019 Women’s Curling Club Championships (formerly the Travelers Championship) in Stephenville.

All four teams involved are sitting at 1-1 following the opening two draws at the Caribou Curling Club on Thursday.

The host rink, Team Porter, which features Erin Porter, Sherri McNeil, Marcheta Gallant and Sherri Kinsman, lost her second game of the day 8-6 to Team Dawe of St. John’s. They were victorious earlier against Corner Brook’s Team Curtis 9-3.

The Curtis rink — consisting of Susan Curtis, Donna Davis, Kathryn Miles and Carolyn Colbourne — rebounded to take down Team Dunne of St. John’s 9-4 in Draw 2.

Team Dunne downed Team Dawe 10-2 in the other game from the women’s division on Thursday.

On the men’s side, west coast rinks are slipped in the standings fast.

The best of the bunch is Team Young of Corner Brook, which includes Kenny Young, Gerry Young, Nicholas O’Neill and Jody Janes, who sit at 2-2 after two wins on Thursday.

They downed Team Brenton of St. John’s 7-1 to start their day, before taking down Stephenville’s Team White 9-4.

Team Thomas of Port aux Basques are 1-2, after losing two games Thursday — 8-5 to Team Feltham of Gander and 8-4 to Team Hawco of St. John’s. That Thomas rink includes Dave Thomas, Travis Cormier, David Power and Floyd Francis.

Team Mullins of Corner Brook find themselves at 1-2 after a 10-5 loss to Team Brenton. Curling for the Mullins rink are Michael Mullins, Terry Oke, Brian King and Doug Piercey.

Action resumes today in both divisions.
